GETTING YOUR POWER CLOTHES

The Lord’s Prayer gives an outline of how Jesus prayed.

Over the disciples’ lifespan we see them grow from falling asleep in the Garden of Gethsemane to becoming a people whose prayers welcomed the will of God from Heaven to earth.

When did they experience significant change in their prayer life? It would appear that the coming of the Holy Spirit changed the practice of prayer in significant ways.

Consider what Jesus told them about the coming Holy Spirit. After miraculously raising from the dead, He appeared to many of his followers and gave some final teaching before ascending to Heaven.

In fact, the last recorded words of Jesus before the Ascension mention very specific things about what was happening.

Luke 24:
45 Then he opened their minds so they could understand the Scriptures. 46 He told them, “This is what is written: The Messiah will suffer and rise from the dead on the third day, 47 and repentance for the forgiveness of sins will be preached in his name to all nations, beginning at Jerusalem. 48 You are witnesses of these things. 49 I am going to send you what my Father has promised; but stay in the city until you have been clothed with power from on high.”

Jesus describes the Holy Spirit in a couple significant ways here. First, Jesus is going to send the Holy Spirit in place of his own physical presence. Jesus said that this is what the Father had promised. We see this in the ancient prophecies. For example:

Joel 2:
28 “And afterward,
I will pour out my Spirit on all people.
Your sons and daughters will prophesy,
your old men will dream dreams,
your young men will see visions.
29 Even on my servants, both men and women,
I will pour out my Spirit in those days.

The effect of God’s Holy Spirit in our lives changes us into dreamers and visionaries. God has always wanted to bring His Holy Spirit to be in our lives. To know that this is God’s plan and desire sets the stage for a new kind of relationship with humanity.

The second thing we see in Jesus’ words is a description of being clothed with power. Clothing is something that is added on to your being. Clothing covers and comforts us. Clothing protects us and adds something to our identity.

My feet were not born wearing socks. They had to be put on. Likewise, the power of God is not something that you generate or create. God’s power comes into our life as the Holy Spirit covers us. We are clothed with the power of His Spirit.
